Last night the SVUSD Trustees considered $10 million in cuts for next year, but only took action to close O’Neill Elementary School. In January the Board voted 3-2 to keep Mission Viejo’s oldest school open, but on Tuesday evening reversed the previous action 4-1. Only Trustee Dore Gilbert continued to support O’Neill.
The District will now work on redrawing boundaries for other elementary schools within the area, so the current O’Neill students can be reassigned for next school year.
Although about 150 pink slips will be issued in the District, none of the possible layoffs will be final until the Board completes its budget work over the next couple months. Hundreds of parents attended the meeting to prevent cutbacks of teachers, academic programs, sports programs, and busing, but no definitive actions were taken by the Board.
